I've been relatively silent during the opening months of the year since I had gone on a trip to the United States to visit my ailing grandmother. She, sadly, has passed away. Prior to that, I also had to deal with massive computer issues that have since been resolved. However, I lost most of my master copies of my original files (although my hard copies survived). Fortunately, I have slowly recovered and am now using this slow recovery as a fresh start for my art and the series as a whole.

This gave me the opportunity to rethink the direction of my comics and the aesthetic standard that I hold them to.

Thus, I have decided to publish my current comics on Tapastic. This decision was one I have carefully considered before and only decided to act on recently. So far, I have scheduled a few of the pre-existing comics that I have updated to match my desired aesthetic style and posted them there rather than here or in Tumblr. Only comics and profiles will be posted in Tapas, with newer comics being posted there more or less in exclusion. Meanwhile, art for the series as a whole (including the occasional work-in-progress and one shots) will continue to be featured both here and on Tumblr. In the future, I will consider cross-posting comics on multiple platforms, starting with perhaps Tumblr.

The comic is available here.

So I got Age of Empires II HD Bundle and played a few games in the Philippines map. Weird things about my latest game:

  • On one, I played as the Spanish, trying to get the general feel of the game while enacting a hypothetical (and somewhat anachronistic and very ahistorical) scenario of Spanish conquest of the country (against the Malays, which, in-game, include the states that will one day become the Philippines).
  • I had a general idea of where my approximate starting position was found in the real Philippines. The few earlier times I tried the map often landed me north of the biggest island, Luzon, which made me refer to that starting position as either Manila itself or Taliwasi, the historic city states occupying that region. As the Spanish, I ended up in what is apparently Mindanao rather than the Visayas as the Spanish actually landed in. Should I decide to actually make a let's play, I will be more than eager to use the exact place name to describe my starting settlement and name subsequent settlements accordingly.
  • I am still interested in creating a scenario (or if we're ambitious, a full campaign) where the ancient Filipinos as portrayed by the Malays in the Feudal and Castle ages go against each other and eventually the Imperial-age Spanish (and with the final scenario being the Battle of Mactan, the Spanish losing). The idea of gaining population by controlling villages and gaining advanced units via capture as in the Majapahit Campaign interests me greatly.

Due to, erm, "recent political developments" surrounding my country that I find personally appalling, I have decided to avoid using the word "hero" in any way, shape or form as until said event has been satisfactorily resolved, I cannot use the word hero unironically. If you are not from the Philippines and thus are unaware of the nature of the event, please send me a note and I'll explain the issues to you. If you are from the Philippines, the nature of the event should be clear to you I'd prefer that you not bring it up if you happen to recognize exactly where I stand in the position.
